Father Miguel Hidalgo on Sept. 16 1810 proclaimed independence from Spain.This declaration of national independence know in Mexico as "Grito de Dolores"and this made a decade long struggle for independence from Spain. Key People were Father Jose Maria Moreloes; General Augustin DE Lturbide, who defeated the Spaniards and ruled as Mexican emperor from 1822-23.
An 1821 treaty recognize Mexican independence from Spain and called for a constitutional monarchy. The planned Monarchy failed; a republic was proclaimed in Decemeber 1822 and established in 1824.
